Roy Colson attended the University of Auburn and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he joined the army for two years to see the world. After getting out of the Army, he started looking for a job. He was attracted to the air conditioning sales market because of the money he was told he could make in it by selling air conditioning equipment. In 1964, Roy signed on with The Trane Co. and worked with Dick Goettling in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine Area. At that time, the average sales a week were 3-4 package units a week. Roy became a member of the Jacksonville Chapter of ASHRAE in 1964.
In 1967, Roy decided to open up his own Mechanical Contractor business with the help of Trane. The Trane Dealer Development Program helped to train Roy for being in business and also financially helped in getting the company off the ground. He started in 1967 and continued in business until 1984 serving the Jacksonville area. In 1984, he joined Weather Engineers as a subcontractor with Roy Colson Inc. It has been a successful run of years for Roy and Weather Engineers in Jacksonville.
While building The Colson Co., Roy became involved in the Chairs and Committees of ASHRAE. He has chaired the Oyster Roast, President’s Ball, Golf Outings, Research Promotion, and the Chapter Regional Conference. He went thru all the chairs and became President in 1975. While chapter president, the chapter received the Presidential Award of Excellence for the outstanding work the chapter did in that year.
As a member of ASHRAE, Roy was able to meet the other professionals in his industry. Meeting the engineers, contractors, building owners, and sales representatives allowed relationships to build trust and made it easier to work closer together on projects. These relationships have continued to grow throughout the years.
